First of all, thank you for the great honor and privilege of being able to serve as your representative in the statehouse. I recognize I serve at the will of the people, so thank you.
The regular legislative session for 2022 is over, and I'm very proud of what I achieved this year.
I promised you I would fight for safer communities, fully fund law enforcement, protect our veterans, and preserve your 2nd Amendment rights. I also vowed to fight to fix our broken schools, oppose government overreach, and, most importantly, fight for your rights. And I did!
I presented real solutions to help fix crime with the following bills:
HB 25 - Providing for no time limitation for prosecuting second-degree murder.
HB 27 - If there is evidence that a person is dangerous, no release conditions will be reasonable to protect the community, and no bail will be allowed.
HB 29 - Creates penalties to protect us and retail businesses from the recent "smash and grab" trend in stores.
HB 31 - Providing additional penalties for criminals with three violent felony convictions.
HJR 4 - Amending the constitution of New Mexico to allow conditions for denying bail.
I signed onto a bill that would limit the governor's currently unlimited authority to create unilateral executive mandates for a second time.
HB 10, 40, HJR 1 - Rescinding the governor's emergency powers.
In this session, I authored a constitutional amendment to create a law that would allow any statewide or legislative elected official to be recalled by the people of New Mexico.
HJR 12 - Recall of elected officials.
I fought for tax relief for our senior citizens and our military veterans by co-sponsoring the following bills:
HB 48/49 - Exempt Social Security income from state income tax.
HB 76 - Military retirement income tax exemption.
I also co-sponsored efforts to fix our broken public school system, which, as you know, is ranked last in the nation.
HJR 11/15 - Public funding to parents for home, private, or religious-based schools, including virtual schools.
HB 91 - Prohibiting language such as "Destruction of Americas by Spaniards" from the NMPED new social studies program.
My proudest accomplishment in this session was fighting and defeating the usual unconstitutional anti-2nd Amendment bills that punish legal gun owners and don't stop violent criminals.
HB 68 - Created a new fourth-degree felony penalty for anyone under 19 with a gun and any adult within 1000 feet of a school zone. Luckily, the sponsor of this bill listened to me and public input. The portions of this bill making minors into felons and the gun-free school zone were removed from this bill.
HB 9 – "Safe" gun storage. This bill would have made parents into felons if a minor had any access to a weapon.
HB 156 – A pipeline-to-prison bill designating all firearms with a magazine capacity larger than 15 rounds as a "large-capacity" magazine and making simple possession of such magazines a felony under New Mexico law. This bill would have turned thousands of law-abiding New Mexicans into felons overnight.
We also stopped the Governor's radical agenda to increase New Mexico's gas prices.
Thank you again for allowing me to serve as your representative.
"There are so many wonderful things about New Mexico, and it deserves to be recognized as a great state to raise children, start a business, visit, move to, and feel safe in."
